Current EHV-1/EHM Biosecurity Protocols at Horse Haven Ranch (St. George, UT)

We’re Open & Staying Extra Safe – Here’s Exactly How We’re Protecting Your Horse During the 2025 EHV-1 Outbreak

At Horse Haven Ranch, your horse’s health and your peace of mind always come first. During the current Equine Herpesvirus (EHV-1) and Equine Herpesvirus Myeloencephalopathy (EHM) concerns in the western U.S., we have strengthened our already-rigorous biosecurity to the highest level possible while still welcoming traveling horses.

Here’s exactly what we’re doing right now:

One Client at a Time

Zero Overlap Only one client is allowed on the property at any given moment with their horses. There is never shared air space, shared turnout, or shared equipment. When your horse leaves, we do a complete clean-and-disinfect cycle before the next horse arrives.  Please note that we are always super cautious to keep horses safe, and even during non-outbreak times will NEVER put client's horses directly next to each other.  There is always a buffer.

Proven, Horse-Safe Disinfection with Benefect Botanical Decon 30

Every surface your horse contacts (panels, gates, walls, rubber mats, water buckets, feed tubs, forks, wheelbarrows, and even the barn siding) is thoroughly sprayed with Benefect Botanical Decon 30 – an EPA-registered, plant-based (thymol) disinfectant with published, peer-reviewed efficacy against EHV-1, including the neurologic form (EHM). It works even in the presence of manure and dirt, is non-corrosive, has no harsh fumes, and is safe to use while horses remain in their runs (although we never spray in the presence of horses). Colorado State University, UC Davis, and the AAEP all list it as an approved disinfectant for EHV-1/EHM outbreaks. Read more here: https://benefect.com/ca/products/decon-30/

  • Health certificate no older than 5 days with the EHV statement your vet knows to include

  • Twice-daily temperature log starting at least 2 days prior to arrival

  • Up-to-date core vaccinations (let us know in advance about any medical exemptions) Core vaccinations include: Eastern/Western Encephalomyelitis (EEE/WEE), West Nile (WNV), Flu/Rhino, Tetanus, and Rabies

Administering Medical Injection

Fully Gated & Controlled Access

Our entire facility is securely gated with no public access. No strangers, delivery drivers, visitors, or even other horse owners can just “walk on” or drive through the property. You’ll receive entry instructions when you book, and the gate stays closed and locked at all other times. This eliminates the biggest everyday risk factor — random people (and whatever might be on their hands, boots or tires) coming into contact with your horse.  You have a specific code to the property to enter/leave 24/7.  You never have to wait for specific hours to check on your horse if you want to. Please note: We provide our clients consistent updates with their horses via text and pictures (manure, water, personal health, etc).

Transporters

Many transporters have opted to put their businesses on hold for the safety of their client's horses.  We are allowing transporters to book here with a couple of requirements:

#1. Horses can ONLY be by one owner - no multi-owner loads

#2. Trailer MUST be clean, sanitized, and disinfected between your loads

#3. Trailer will be parked on the side of the street, not directly on the property

#4. If you're part of a large farm/stable/etc all horses must be from the same place.

#5. If you're picking up horses who have flown here and they've been in quarantine, we will accept them as well with our required forms and paperwork (see the header "what we require of you").

#6. We have space for multiple trailers as long as they're coming from the same farm/same place.  We can fit all sizes - everything from a semi to a 7-slant, and more!
Yes, it's a lot - but we want our place to stay safe, clean and comfortable for everyone coming through - this includes you!  You are welcome to stay in our room *or* sleep in your trailer.  We also have hotels 5-10 minutes away.

Resident Horses

The only horses that live here full-time are our two fully vaccinated miniature horses Prince Caspian "Cas" and Licorice "Lic". When your horses are here, ours will never be directly next to yours and will avoid nose-to-nose contact at all costs.  We can handle up to 12 horses, but that's with the indoor stalls locked off from the runs (we have 6 stalls with attached runs).  All horses must be from the same owner (or farm) - this includes transports. As unbelievably cute as they are PLEASE do not pet them without talking to us first.

We believe these measures let us stay open responsibly and give traveling horses (and their people) a safe, clean, stress-free place to rest.

If you have any questions at all, please text or call (or text) us anytime at 435-669-9082 – we try to answer right away, but if we cannot, rest assured we'll contact you right back.

Safe travels, The Horse Haven Ranch Team 🐎💙
